✦ The portion this week
Portion summary
Bereshit opens with God speaking the universe into order across six days, crowning the work with man and woman made in His image, and resting on the seventh. Adam and Eve are placed in a garden with one prohibition, which the serpent turns into doubt, and their reach for the tree brings exile, shame, and a curse woven into ground and womb alike. Cain murders Abel out of a jealousy God had already warned him to master, and the generations that follow multiply both years and violence, down to Noah, who alone finds favor in the LORD's eyes.
The thread of the parashah
Every aliyah in Bereshit turns on speech and its consequences. God speaks, and there is light, seas, land, breath — "and it was so." Then the serpent speaks, twisting a single command into a question, and the man and woman answer with silence toward God and blame toward each other. Cain hears God speak directly — "if you do what is right, will you not be accepted?" — and answers not with words but with his brother's blood. The pattern repeats and thickens: divine word offered, human word (or human silence) breaking against it. Even the long genealogy of chapter 5, with its relentless "and he died," is itself a kind of speech — a record of how far death traveled from one bitten fruit.
Yet within the curse itself is a first word of hope: to the serpent God says, "her seed... He will crush your head, and you will strike his heel" (Genesis 3:15). The garden closes with cherubim and a flaming sword, but it closes having already promised a reopening.
The haftarah
Isaiah addresses a people who, like Adam, have eyes but do not see and ears but do not hear (Isaiah 42:18-20) — the blindness of Eden repeating itself in Jacob's exile. But the prophet roots his hope in the same ground Bereshit does: "This is what God the LORD says — He who created the heavens... who gives breath to the people on it" (Isaiah 42:5). The God who formed man from dust and breathed into him (Genesis 2:7) is the same God who forms Jacob and calls him by name (Isaiah 43:1), who leads the blind by a way they did not know (Isaiah 42:16) and passes His people through waters and fire without losing them (Isaiah 43:2). Creation and redemption are not two acts but one hand.
Messiah in the portion
John will not let Bereshit stay in the past tense: "In the beginning was the Word... all things were made through Him" (John 1:1-3). The One who said "let there be light" in Genesis 1:3 is the same Light that "shines in the darkness" in John 1:5 — not a new claim but the oldest one, spoken plainly at last. Paul's language in Colossians 1:15-17 answers Genesis 1:26 directly: man was made in the image of God, but the Son is the image of God, and in Him, not merely by His decree, "all things hold together." Hebrews 1:3 gives the crushed heel of Genesis 3:15 its full weight — the Son who upholds all things is the same Son who provided purification for sins before He sat down.
For the week
Notice this week where silence stands where an honest word to God is owed, and where a careless word stands where silence would serve a brother better. Bring both before Him plainly, the way Adam was asked to and did not.

Aliyah 1 · Genesis 1:1–2:3
1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 1:2 Now the earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters. The First Day 1:3 And God said, “ Let there be light,” and there was light. 1:4 And God saw that the light was good, and He separated the light from the darkness. 1:5 God called the light “ day,” and the darkness He called “ night.” And there was evening, and there was morning — the first day. The Second Day 1:6 And God said, “ Let there be an expanse between the waters, to separate the waters from the waters.” 1:7 So God made the expanse and separated the waters beneath it from the waters above. And it was so. 1:8 God called the expanse “ sky.” And there was evening, and there was morning — the second day. The Third Day 1:9 And God said, “ Let the waters under the sky be gathered into one place, so that the dry land may appear.” And it was so. 1:10 God called the dry land “earth,” and the gathering of waters He called “ seas.” And God saw that it was good. 1:11 Then God said, “ Let the earth bring forth vegetation: seed-bearing plants and fruit trees, each bearing fruit with seed according to its kind.” And it was so. 1:12 The earth produced vegetation: seed-bearing plants according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. 1:13 And there was evening, and there was morning — the third day. The Fourth Day 1:14 And God said, “ Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to distinguish between the day and the night, and let them be signs to mark the seasons and days and years. 1:15 And let them serve as lights in the expanse of the sky to shine upon the earth.” And it was so. 1:16 God made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night. And He made the stars as well. 1:17 God set these lights in the expanse of the sky to shine upon the earth, 1:18 to preside over the day and the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. 1:19 And there was evening, and there was morning — the fourth day. The Fifth Day 1:20 And God said, “ Let the waters teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth in the open expanse of the sky.” 1:21 So God created the great sea creatures and every living thing that moves, with which the waters teemed according to their kinds, and every bird of flight after its kind. And God saw that it was good. 1:22 Then God blessed them and said, “ Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters of the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.” 1:23 And there was evening, and there was morning — the fifth day. The Sixth Day 1:24 And God said, “ Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to their kinds: livestock, land crawlers, and beasts of the earth according to their kinds.” And it was so. 1:25 God made the beasts of the earth according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and everything that crawls upon the earth according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 1:26 Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, after Our likeness, to rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, and over all the earth itself and every creature that crawls upon it.” 1:27 So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. 1:28 God blessed them and said to them, “ Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and every creature that crawls upon the earth.” 1:29 Then God said, “ Behold, I have given you every seed-bearing plant on the face of all the earth, and every tree whose fruit contains seed. They will be yours for food. 1:30 And to every beast of the earth and every bird of the air and every creature that crawls upon the earth — everything that has the breath of life in it — I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so. 1:31 And God looked upon all that He had made, and indeed, it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning — the sixth day. 2:1 Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array. 2:2 And by the seventh day God had finished the work He had been doing; so on that day He rested from all His work. 2:3 Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because on that day He rested from all the work of creation that He had accomplished. Man and Woman in the Garden
Aliyah 2 · Genesis 2:4-19
2:4 This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made them. 2:5 Now no shrub of the field had yet appeared on the earth, nor had any plant of the field sprouted; for the LORD God had not yet sent rain upon the earth, and there was no man to cultivate the ground. 2:6 But springs welled up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground. 2:7 Then the LORD God formed man from the dust of the ground and breathed the breath of life into his nostrils, and the man became a living being. 2:8 And the LORD God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, where He placed the man He had formed. 2:9 Out of the ground the LORD God gave growth to every tree that is pleasing to the eye and good for food. And in the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. 2:10 Now a river flowed out of Eden to water the garden, and from there it branched into four headwaters: 2:11 The name of the first river is Pishon; it winds through the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold. 2:12 And the gold of that land is pure, and bdellium and onyx are found there. 2:13 The name of the second river is Gihon; it winds through the whole land of Cush. 2:14 The name of the third river is Hiddekel; it runs along the east side of Assyria. And the fourth river is the Euphrates. 2:15 Then the LORD God took the man and placed him in the Garden of Eden to cultivate and keep it. 2:16 And the LORD God commanded him, “ You may eat freely from every tree of the garden, 2:17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil; for in the day that you eat of it, you will surely die.” 2:18 The LORD God also said, “ It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make for him a suitable helper.” 2:19 And out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and He brought them to the man to see what he would name each one. And whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name.
Aliyah 3 · Genesis 2:20–3:21
2:20 The man gave names to all the livestock, to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field. But for Adam no suitable helper was found. 2:21 So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep, and while he slept, He took one of the man ’s ribs and closed up the area with flesh. 2:22 And from the rib that the LORD God had taken from the man, He made a woman and brought her to him. 2:23 And the man said: “ This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’ for out of man she was taken.” 2:24 For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh. 2:25 And the man and his wife were both naked, and they were not ashamed. 3:1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any beast of the field that the LORD God had made. And he said to the woman, “ Did God really say, ‘ You must not eat from any tree in the garden?’” 3:2 The woman answered the serpent, “We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden, 3:3 but about the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden, God has said, ‘ You must not eat of it or touch it, or you will die.’” 3:4 “ You will not surely die,” the serpent told her. 3:5 “ For God knows that in the day you eat of it, your eyes will be opened and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” 3:6 When the woman saw that the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eyes, and that it was desirable for obtaining wisdom, she took the fruit and ate it. She also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate it. 3:7 And the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; so they sewed together fig leaves and made coverings for themselves. God Arraigns Adam and Eve 3:8 Then the man and his wife heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the breeze of the day, and they hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden. 3:9 But the LORD God called out to the man, “Where are you?” 3:10 “ I heard Your voice in the garden,” he replied, “ and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid myself.” 3:11 “ Who told you that you were naked?” asked the LORD God. “ Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” 3:12 And the man answered, “ The woman whom You gave me, she gave me fruit from the tree, and I ate it.” 3:13 Then the LORD God said to the woman, “ What is this you have done?” “ The serpent deceived me,” she replied, “ and I ate.” The Fate of the Serpent 3:14 So the LORD God said to the serpent: “ Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and every beast of the field! On your belly will you go, and dust you will eat, all the days of your life. 3:15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed. He will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.” The Punishment of Mankind 3:16 To the woman He said: “ I will sharply increase your pain in childbirth; in pain you will bring forth children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.” 3:17 And to Adam He said: “ Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat, cursed is the ground because of you; through toil you will eat of it all the days of your life. 3:18 Both thorns and thistles it will yield for you, and you will eat the plants of the field. 3:19 By the sweat of your brow you will eat your bread, until you return to the ground — because out of it were you taken. For dust you are, and to dust you shall return.” 3:20 And Adam named his wife Eve, because she would be the mother of all the living. The Expulsion from Paradise 3:21 And the LORD God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife, and He clothed them.
Aliyah 4 · Genesis 3:22–4:18
3:22 Then the LORD God said, “ Behold, the man has become like one of Us, knowing good and evil. And now, lest he reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life, and eat, and live forever...” 3:23 Therefore the LORD God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken. 3:24 So He drove out the man and stationed cherubim on the east side of the Garden of Eden, along with a whirling sword of flame to guard the way to the tree of life. 4:1 And Adam had relations with his wife Eve, and she conceived and gave birth to Cain. “ With the help of the LORD I have brought forth a man,” she said. 4:2 Later she gave birth to Cain ’s brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, while Cain was a tiller of the soil. 4:3 So in the course of time, Cain brought some of the fruit of the soil as an offering to the LORD, 4:4 while Abel brought the best portions of the firstborn of his flock. And the LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering, 4:5 but He had no regard for Cain and his offering. So Cain became very angry, and his countenance fell. 4:6 “ Why are you angry,” said the LORD to Cain, “ and why has your countenance fallen? 4:7 If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you refuse to do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires you, but you must master it.” 4:8 Then Cain said to his brother Abel, “ Let us go out to the field.” And while they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel and killed him. 4:9 And the LORD said to Cain, “ Where is your brother Abel?” “ I do not know!” he answered. “ Am I my brother’s keeper?” 4:10 “ What have you done?” replied the LORD. “ The voice of your brother’s blood cries out to Me from the ground. 4:11 Now you are cursed and banished from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand. 4:12 When you till the ground, it will no longer yield its produce to you. You will be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth.” 4:13 But Cain said to the LORD, “ My punishment is greater than I can bear. 4:14 Behold, this day You have driven me from the face of the earth, and from Your face I will be hidden; I will be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.” 4:15 “ Not so!” replied the LORD. “ If anyone slays Cain, then Cain will be avenged sevenfold.” And the LORD placed a mark on Cain, so that no one who found him would kill him. 4:16 So Cain went out from the presence of the LORD and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden. The Descendants of Cain 4:17 And Cain had relations with his wife, and she conceived and gave birth to Enoch. Then Cain built a city and named it after his son Enoch. 4:18 Now to Enoch was born Irad, and Irad was the father of Mehujael, and Mehujael was the father of Methusael, and Methusael was the father of Lamech.
Aliyah 5 · Genesis 4:19-22
4:19 And Lamech married two women, one named Adah and the other Zillah. 4:20 Adah gave birth to Jabal; he was the father of those who dwell in tents and raise livestock. 4:21 And his brother’s name was Jubal; he was the father of all who play the harp and flute. 4:22 And Zillah gave birth to Tubal-cain, a forger of every implement of bronze and iron. And the sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah.
Aliyah 6 · Genesis 4:23–5:24
4:23 Then Lamech said to his wives: “ Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; wives of Lamech, listen to my speech. For I have slain a man for wounding me, a young man for striking me. 4:24 If Cain is avenged sevenfold, then Lamech seventy-sevenfold.” Seth and Enosh 4:25 And Adam again had relations with his wife, and she gave birth to a son and named him Seth, saying, “God has granted me another seed in place of Abel, since Cain killed him.” 4:26 And to Seth also a son was born, and he called him Enosh. At that time men began to call upon the name of the LORD. 5:1 This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, He made him in His own likeness. 5:2 Male and female He created them, and He blessed them. And in the day they were created, He called them “ man.” 5:3 When Adam was 130 years old, he had a son in his own likeness, after his own image; and he named him Seth. 5:4 And after he had become the father of Seth, Adam lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters. 5:5 So Adam lived a total of 930 years, and then he died. 5:6 When Seth was 105 years old, he became the father of Enosh. 5:7 And after he had become the father of Enosh, Seth lived 807 years and had other sons and daughters. 5:8 So Seth lived a total of 912 years, and then he died. 5:9 When Enosh was 90 years old, he became the father of Kenan. 5:10 And after he had become the father of Kenan, Enosh lived 815 years and had other sons and daughters. 5:11 So Enosh lived a total of 905 years, and then he died. 5:12 When Kenan was 70 years old, he became the father of Mahalalel. 5:13 And after he had become the father of Mahalalel, Kenan lived 840 years and had other sons and daughters. 5:14 So Kenan lived a total of 910 years, and then he died. 5:15 When Mahalalel was 65 years old, he became the father of Jared. 5:16 And after he had become the father of Jared, Mahalalel lived 830 years and had other sons and daughters. 5:17 So Mahalalel lived a total of 895 years, and then he died. God Takes Up Enoch (Hebrews 11:5) 5:18 When Jared was 162 years old, he became the father of Enoch. 5:19 And after he had become the father of Enoch, Jared lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters. 5:20 So Jared lived a total of 962 years, and then he died. 5:21 When Enoch was 65 years old, he became the father of Methuselah. 5:22 And after he had become the father of Methuselah, Enoch walked with God 300 years and had other sons and daughters. 5:23 So Enoch lived a total of 365 years. 5:24 Enoch walked with God, and then he was no more, because God had taken him away. From Methuselah to Noah
Aliyah 7 · Genesis 5:25–6:8
5:25 When Methuselah was 187 years old, he became the father of Lamech. 5:26 And after he had become the father of Lamech, Methuselah lived 782 years and had other sons and daughters. 5:27 So Methuselah lived a total of 969 years, and then he died. 5:28 When Lamech was 182 years old, he had a son. 5:29 And he named him Noah, saying, “ May this one comfort us in the labor and toil of our hands caused by the ground that the LORD has cursed.” 5:30 And after he had become the father of Noah, Lamech lived 595 years and had other sons and daughters. 5:31 So Lamech lived a total of 777 years, and then he died. 5:32 After Noah was 500 years old, he became the father of Shem, Ham, and Japheth. 6:1 Now when men began to multiply on the face of the earth and daughters were born to them, 6:2 the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful, and they took as wives whomever they chose. 6:3 So the LORD said, “ My Spirit will not contend with man forever, for he is mortal; his days shall be 120 years.” 6:4 The Nephilim were on the earth in those days — and afterward as well — when the sons of God had relations with the daughters of men. And they bore them children who became the mighty men of old, men of renown. 6:5 Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great upon the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was altogether evil all the time. 6:6 And the LORD regretted that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart. 6:7 So the LORD said, “ I will blot out man, whom I have created, from the face of the earth — every man and beast and crawling creature and bird of the air — for I am grieved that I have made them.” Noah’s Favor with God 6:8 Noah, however, found favor in the eyes of the LORD.
✦ Haftarah (Prophets)
42:5 This is what God the LORD says — He who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and its offspring, who gives breath to the people on it and life to those who walk in it: 42:6 “ I, the LORD, have called you for a righteous purpose, and I will take hold of your hand. I will keep you and appoint you to be a covenant for the people and a light to the nations, 42:7 to open the eyes of the blind, to bring prisoners out of the dungeon and those sitting in darkness out from the prison house. 42:8 I am the LORD; that is My name! I will not yield My glory to another or My praise to idols. 42:9 Behold, the former things have happened, and now I declare new things. Before they spring forth I proclaim them to you.” A New Song of Praise (Psalms 98:1–9; Psalms 149:1–9) 42:10 Sing to the LORD a new song — His praise from the ends of the earth— you who go down to the sea, and all that is in it, you islands, and all who dwell in them. 42:11 Let the desert and its cities raise their voices; let the villages of Kedar cry aloud. Let the people of Sela sing for joy; let them cry out from the mountaintops. 42:12 Let them give glory to the LORD and declare His praise in the islands. 42:13 The LORD goes forth like a mighty one; He stirs up His zeal like a warrior. He shouts; yes, He roars in triumph over His enemies: 42:14 “I have kept silent from ages past; I have remained quiet and restrained. But now I will groan like a woman in labor; I will at once gasp and pant. 42:15 I will lay waste the mountains and hills and dry up all their vegetation. I will turn the rivers into dry land and drain the marshes. 42:16 I will lead the blind by a way they did not know; I will guide them on unfamiliar paths. I will turn darkness into light before them and rough places into level ground. These things I will do for them, and I will not forsake them. 42:17 But those who trust in idols and say to molten images, ‘You are our gods!’ will be turned back in utter shame. Israel Is Deaf and Blind 42:18 Listen, you deaf ones; look, you blind ones, that you may see! 42:19 Who is blind but My servant, or deaf like the messenger I am sending? Who is blind like My covenant partner, or blind like the servant of the LORD? 42:20 Though seeing many things, you do not keep watch. Though your ears are open, you do not hear.” 42:21 The LORD was pleased, for the sake of His righteousness, to magnify His law and make it glorious. 42:22 But this is a people plundered and looted, all trapped in caves or imprisoned in dungeons. They have become plunder with no one to rescue them, and loot with no one to say, “Send them back!” 42:23 Who among you will pay attention to this? Who will listen and obey hereafter? 42:24 Who gave Jacob up for spoil, and Israel to the plunderers? Was it not the LORD, against whom we have sinned? They were unwilling to walk in His ways, and they would not obey His law. 42:25 So He poured out on them His furious anger and the fierceness of battle. It enveloped them in flames, but they did not understand; it consumed them, but they did not take it to heart. 43:1 Now this is what the LORD says — He who created you, O Jacob, and He who formed you, O Israel: “ Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; you are Mine! 43:2 When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you go through the rivers, they will not overwhelm you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be scorched; the flames will not set you ablaze. 43:3 For I am the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior; I give Egypt for your ransom, Cush and Seba in your place. 43:4 Because you are precious and honored in My sight, and because I love you, I will give men in exchange for you and nations in place of your life. 43:5 Do not be afraid, for I am with you; I will bring your offspring from the east and gather you from the west. 43:6 I will say to the north, ‘ Give them up!’ and to the south, ‘Do not hold them back!’ Bring My sons from afar, and My daughters from the ends of the earth— 43:7 everyone called by My name and created for My glory, whom I have indeed formed and made.” 43:8 Bring out a people who have eyes but are blind, and who have ears but are deaf. 43:9 All the nations gather together and the peoples assemble. Who among them can declare this, and proclaim to us the former things? Let them present their witnesses to vindicate them, so that others may hear and say, “ It is true.” 43:10 “ You are My witnesses,” declares the LORD, “ and My servant whom I have chosen, so that you may consider and believe Me and understand that I am He. Before Me no god was formed, and after Me none will come.
✦ Brit Hadashah (Renewed Covenant)
1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 1:2 He was with God in the beginning. 1:3 Through Him all things were made, and without Him nothing was made that has been made. 1:4 In Him was life, and that life was the light of men. 1:5 The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. The Witness of John 1:6 There came a man who was sent from God. His name was John. 1:7 He came as a witness to testify about the Light, so that through him everyone might believe. 1:8 He himself was not the Light, but he came to testify about the Light. 1:9 The true Light who gives light to every man was coming into the world. 1:10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through Him, the world did not recognize Him. 1:11 He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him. 1:12 But to all who did receive Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God — 1:13 children born not of blood, nor of the desire or will of man, but born of God. The Word Became Flesh (Psalms 84:1–12) 1:14 The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the one and only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
1:15 The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 1:16 For in Him all things were created, things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities. All things were created through Him and for Him. 1:17 He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.
1:1 On many past occasions and in many different ways, God spoke to our fathers through the prophets. 1:2 But in these last days He has spoken to us by His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, and through whom He made the universe. 1:3 The Son is the radiance of God ’s glory and the exact representation of His nature, upholding all things by His powerful word. After He had provided purification for sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.
