✦ The portion this week
Portion summary
Moses, at the very end of his life, pronounces blessing over each tribe of Israel, then climbs Mount Nebo to view the land he will not enter. There the LORD shows him its whole span, from Gilead to the Western Sea, and there Moses dies, buried by God Himself in a grave no one has ever found. Israel mourns him thirty days, and leadership passes to Joshua, upon whom Moses had laid his hands. The Torah closes with the plain statement that no prophet has arisen since like Moses, "whom the LORD knew face to face."
The thread of the parashah
The portion is named berakhah — blessing — and that word governs everything. Each tribe receives a word fitted to its calling: Levi is given the Urim and Thummim and the task of teaching and altar-service (Deuteronomy 33:8-10); Joseph is crowned with dew and harvest (Deuteronomy 33:13-16); Israel as a whole is called blessed, secure, carried on everlasting arms (Deuteronomy 33:26-29). But the blessing is spoken by a man who himself will not walk into what he blesses. Moses sees the land with his own eyes and dies outside it. The thread running through the aliyot is this tension between the word of blessing and the entering of blessing — between promise pronounced and promise possessed. Moses gives the first; Joshua, filled with "the spirit of wisdom" through Moses' laying on of hands (Deuteronomy 34:9), is raised up to give the second.
The haftarah
Joshua 1 picks up the account without a breath's pause: "Moses My servant is dead. Now therefore arise." The haftarah answers the unfinished business of the parashah — the land seen but not entered by Moses is now to be entered by the people under a new servant. The charge to Joshua is not passion but fidelity: "Be careful to observe all the law... meditate on it day and night" (Joshua 1:7-8). The blessing pronounced from Nebo becomes the inheritance walked into at the Jordan, and the pattern set is permanent: God's promises outlast any single servant, however great.
Messiah in the portion
Deuteronomy ends by naming what made Moses unrepeatable — the LORD "knew him face to face" (Deuteronomy 34:10). Revelation ends the whole Book by widening that privilege to a redeemed people: "They will see His face, and His name will be on their foreheads" (Revelation 22:4). What was singular in Moses becomes corporate in the city of God. And where Moses stood on Nebo and looked at a land he could view but not tread, John is shown a city he can describe in full — river, tree, throne, no curse (Revelation 22:1-3). Yehoshua, "the LORD saves," led Israel's body across the Jordan into a real inheritance; Yeshua leads His people into an inheritance no exile or death can interrupt. The altar and incense given to Levi (Deuteronomy 33:10) find their rest in the servants who "worship Him" before the throne (Revelation 22:3) — service completed, not replaced.
For the week
Take up Joshua's charge literally: read the week's Torah portion aloud once more before Shabbat closes, slowly, as instruction rather than information. Bless someone this week the way Moses blessed the tribes — specifically, by name, according to what they actually carry — rather than in generalities.

Aliyah 1 · Deuteronomy 33:1-7
33:1 This is the blessing that Moses the man of God pronounced upon the Israelites before his death. 33:2 He said: “ The LORD came from Sinai and dawned upon us from Seir; He shone forth from Mount Paran and came with myriads of holy ones, with flaming fire at His right hand. 33:3 Surely You love the people; all the holy ones are in Your hand, and they sit down at Your feet; each receives Your words — 33:4 the law that Moses gave us, the possession of the assembly of Jacob. 33:5 So the LORD became King in Jeshurun when the leaders of the people gathered, when the tribes of Israel came together. 33:6 Let Reuben live and not die, nor his men be few.” 33:7 And concerning Judah he said: “ O LORD, hear the cry of Judah and bring him to his people. With his own hands he defends his cause, but may You be a help against his foes.”
Aliyah 2 · Deuteronomy 33:8-12
33:8 Concerning Levi he said: “Give Your Thummim to Levi and Your Urim to Your godly one, whom You tested at Massah and contested at the waters of Meribah. 33:9 He said of his father and mother, ‘ I do not consider them.’ He disregarded his brothers and did not know his own sons, for he kept Your word and maintained Your covenant. 33:10 He will teach Your ordinances to Jacob and Your law to Israel; he will set incense before You and whole burnt offerings on Your altar. 33:11 Bless his substance, O LORD, and accept the work of his hands. Smash the loins of those who rise against him, and of his foes so they can rise no more.” 33:12 Concerning Benjamin he said: “ May the beloved of the LORD rest secure in Him; God shields him all day long, and upon His shoulders he rests.”
Aliyah 3 · Deuteronomy 33:13-17
33:13 Concerning Joseph he said: “ May his land be blessed by the LORD with the precious dew from heaven above and the deep waters that lie beneath, 33:14 with the bountiful harvest from the sun and the abundant yield of the seasons, 33:15 with the best of the ancient mountains and the bounty of the everlasting hills, 33:16 with the choice gifts of the land and everything in it, and with the favor of Him who dwelt in the burning bush. May these rest on the head of Joseph and crown the brow of the prince of his brothers. 33:17 His majesty is like a firstborn bull, and his horns are like those of a wild ox. With them he will gore the nations, even to the ends of the earth. Such are the myriads of Ephraim, and such are the thousands of Manasseh.”
Aliyah 4 · Deuteronomy 33:18-21
33:18 Concerning Zebulun he said: “ Rejoice, Zebulun, in your journeys, and Issachar, in your tents. 33:19 They will call the peoples to a mountain; there they will offer sacrifices of righteousness. For they will feast on the abundance of the seas and the hidden treasures of the sand.” 33:20 Concerning Gad he said: “ Blessed is he who enlarges the domain of Gad! He lies down like a lion and tears off an arm or a head. 33:21 He chose the best land for himself, because a ruler’s portion was reserved for him there. He came with the leaders of the people; he administered the LORD ’s justice and His ordinances for Israel.”
Aliyah 5 · Deuteronomy 33:22-26
33:22 Concerning Dan he said: “ Dan is a lion’s cub, leaping out of Bashan.” 33:23 Concerning Naphtali he said: “ Naphtali is abounding with favor, full of the blessing of the LORD; he shall take possession of the sea and the south.” 33:24 And concerning Asher he said: “ May Asher be the most blessed of sons; may he be the most favored among his brothers and dip his foot in oil. 33:25 May the bolts of your gate be iron and bronze, and may your strength match your days.” 33:26 “There is none like the God of Jeshurun, who rides the heavens to your aid, and the clouds in His majesty.
Aliyah 6 · Deuteronomy 33:27-29
33:27 The eternal God is your dwelling place, and underneath are the everlasting arms. He drives out the enemy before you, giving the command, ‘ Destroy him!’ 33:28 So Israel dwells securely; the fountain of Jacob lives untroubled in a land of grain and new wine, where even the heavens drip with dew. 33:29 Blessed are you, O Israel! Who is like you, a people saved by the LORD? He is the shield that protects you, the sword in which you boast. Your enemies will cower before you, and you shall trample their high places.”
Aliyah 7 · Deuteronomy 34:1-12
34:1 Then Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, which faces Jericho. And the LORD showed him the whole land — from Gilead as far as Dan, 34:2 all of Naphtali, the land of Ephraim and Manasseh, all the land of Judah as far as the Western Sea, 34:3 the Negev, and the region from the Valley of Jericho ( the City of Palms) all the way to Zoar. 34:4 And the LORD said to him, “ This is the land that I swore to give Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob when I said, ‘ I will give it to your descendants.’ I have let you see it with your own eyes, but you will not cross into it.” 34:5 So Moses the servant of the LORD died there in the land of Moab, as the LORD had said. 34:6 And He buried him in a valley in the land of Moab facing Beth-peor, and no one to this day knows the location of his grave. 34:7 Moses was a hundred and twenty years old when he died, yet his eyes were not weak, and his vitality had not diminished. 34:8 The Israelites grieved for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days, until the time of weeping and mourning for Moses came to an end. 34:9 Now Joshua son of Nun was filled with the spirit of wisdom because Moses had laid his hands on him. So the Israelites obeyed him and did as the LORD had commanded Moses. 34:10 Since that time, no prophet has risen in Israel like Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face — 34:11 no prophet who did all the signs and wonders that the LORD sent Moses to do in the land of Egypt to Pharaoh and to all his officials and all his land, 34:12 and no prophet who performed all the mighty acts of power and awesome deeds that Moses did in the sight of all Israel.
✦ Haftarah (Prophets)
1:1 Now after the death of His servant Moses, the LORD spoke to Joshua son of Nun, Moses ’ assistant, saying, 1:2 “ Moses My servant is dead. Now therefore arise, you and all these people, and cross over the Jordan into the land that I am giving to the children of Israel. 1:3 I have given you every place where the sole of your foot will tread, just as I promised to Moses. 1:4 Your territory shall extend from the wilderness and Lebanon to the great River Euphrates — all the land of the Hittites — and west as far as the Great Sea. 1:5 No one shall stand against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so will I be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you. 1:6 Be strong and courageous, for you shall give these people the inheritance of the land that I swore to their fathers I would give them. 1:7 Above all, be strong and very courageous. Be careful to observe all the law that My servant Moses commanded you. Do not turn from it to the right or to the left, so that you may prosper wherever you go. 1:8 This Book of the Law must not depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. For then you will prosper and succeed in all you do. 1:9 Have I not commanded you to be strong and courageous? Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua Takes Charge 1:10 Then Joshua commanded the officers of the people: 1:11 “ Go through the camp and tell the people, ‘ Prepare your provisions, for within three days you will cross the Jordan to go in and take possession of the land that the LORD your God is giving you to possess.’” 1:12 But to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh, Joshua said, 1:13 “ Remember what Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you when he said, ‘ The LORD your God will give you rest, and He will give you this land.’ 1:14 Your wives, your young children, and your livestock may remain in the land that Moses gave you on this side of the Jordan. But all your mighty men of valor must be armed for battle to cross over ahead of your brothers and help them, 1:15 until the LORD gives them rest as He has done for you, and your brothers also possess the land that the LORD your God is giving them. Then you may return to the land of your inheritance and take possession of that which Moses the servant of the LORD gave you on the east side of the Jordan.” 1:16 So they answered Joshua, “ Everything you have commanded us we will do, and everywhere you send us we will go. 1:17 Just as we obeyed Moses in all things, so we will obey you. And may the LORD your God be with you, as He was with Moses. 1:18 Anyone who rebels against your order and does not obey your words, all that you command him, will be put to death. Above all, be strong and courageous!”
✦ Brit Hadashah (Renewed Covenant)
22:1 Then the angel showed me a river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb 22:2 down the middle of the main street of the city. On either side of the river stood a tree of life, bearing twelve kinds of fruit and yielding a fresh crop for each month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. 22:3 No longer will there be any curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be within the city, and His servants will worship Him. 22:4 They will see His face, and His name will be on their foreheads. 22:5 There will be no more night in the city, and they will have no need for the light of a lamp or of the sun. For the Lord God will shine on them, and they will reign forever and ever. Jesus Is Coming
