The portion this week

Portion summary

On the eighth day, Aaron and his sons complete their ordination by offering the prescribed sacrifices, and the kavod — the glory — of the LORD appears to the whole congregation in consuming fire (Leviticus 9:23-24). But that same day, Aaron's sons Nadab and Abihu bring "unauthorized fire" before the LORD and are consumed by fire from His presence (Leviticus 10:1-2). Moses then instructs Aaron and his remaining sons in the priestly duties that follow, and the LORD gives Israel the laws distinguishing clean animals from unclean (Leviticus 11:1-47).

The thread of the parashah

The hinge of this parashah is a single sentence: "You must distinguish between the holy and the common, between the clean and the unclean" (Leviticus 10:10). Everything before it and after it turns on this one demand. Aaron's meticulous obedience in chapter 9 — blood on the horns of the altar, fat burned exactly as commanded, the wave offering lifted precisely as Moses instructed — is what makes the kavod appear. Nadab and Abihu's failure is not zeal misplaced but distinction erased: they brought "fire... contrary to His command," collapsing the line between what God ordained and what seemed good to them. The dietary laws that close the portion are not arbitrary; they are Israel's daily, kitchen-table rehearsal of the very distinguishing that cost two priests their lives at the altar. Holiness is not intensity of feeling — it is fidelity to the pattern given.

The haftarah

David's procession with the ark answers to this same thread. Uzzah, like Nadab and Abihu, treats a sacred object with well-meaning informality — reaching out a hand where only prescribed handling belongs — and dies before the LORD (2 Samuel 6:6-7). Only when the ark is carried rightly does David's household receive blessing (2 Samuel 6:12), and only then does he, like Aaron, bless the people in the LORD's name (2 Samuel 6:18; compare Leviticus 9:23). Both narratives insist that nearness to God's presence is a matter of order, not mere enthusiasm — and both end in blessing once that order is honored, David's climaxing in Nathan's promise of a throne "established forever" (2 Samuel 7:16).

Messiah in the portion

The Aaronic system, for all its careful order, could not itself distinguish once for all — it required repetition, and its ministers, however faithful, were mortal and could fall in a moment. Hebrews 7:11 asks the question this parashah forces: "why was there still need for another priest... one in the order of Melchizedek and not in the order of Aaron?" The answer is that Yeshua serves "by the power of an indestructible life" (Hebrews 7:16), ministering not in a copy but in "the true tabernacle... not by man" (Hebrews 8:2). Where Aaron's obedience brought fire that consumed an offering, Messiah's priesthood brings a "better hope, by which we draw near to God" (Hebrews 7:19) — nearness secured, not risked.

For the week

Practice the small distinctions this week — what you eat, what you handle carelessly, what you approach with unthinking familiarity. Holiness is learned in the ordinary boundary before it is felt in the extraordinary fire.

Aliyah 1 · Leviticus 9:1-16

9:1 On the eighth day Moses summoned Aaron and his sons and the elders of Israel. 9:2 He said to Aaron, “ Take for yourself a young bull for a sin offering and a ram for a burnt offering, both without blemish, and present them before the LORD. 9:3 Then speak to the Israelites and say, ‘ Take a male goat for a sin offering, a calf and a lamb —both a year old and without blemish — for a burnt offering, 9:4 an ox and a ram for a peace offering to sacrifice before the LORD, and a grain offering mixed with oil. For today the LORD will appear to you.’” 9:5 So they took what Moses had commanded to the front of the Tent of Meeting, and the whole congregation drew near and stood before the LORD. 9:6 And Moses said, “ This is what the LORD has commanded you to do, so that the glory of the LORD may appear to you.” 9:7 Then Moses said to Aaron, “ Approach the altar and sacrifice your sin offering and your burnt offering to make atonement for yourself and for the people. And sacrifice the people ’s offering to make atonement for them, as the LORD has commanded.” 9:8 So Aaron approached the altar and slaughtered the calf as a sin offering for himself. 9:9 The sons of Aaron brought the blood to him, and he dipped his finger in the blood and applied it to the horns of the altar. And he poured out the rest of the blood at the base of the altar. 9:10 On the altar he burned the fat, the kidneys, and the lobe of the liver from the sin offering, as the LORD had commanded Moses. 9:11 But he burned up the flesh and the hide outside the camp. 9:12 Then Aaron slaughtered the burnt offering. His sons brought him the blood, and he sprinkled it on all sides of the altar. 9:13 They brought him the burnt offering piece by piece, including the head, and he burned them on the altar. 9:14 He washed the entrails and the legs and burned them atop the burnt offering on the altar. 9:15 Aaron then presented the people ’s offering. He took the male goat for the people ’s sin offering, slaughtered it, and offered it for sin like the first one. 9:16 He presented the burnt offering and offered it according to the ordinance.

Aliyah 2 · Leviticus 9:17-23

9:17 Next he presented the grain offering, took a handful of it, and burned it on the altar in addition to the morning ’s burnt offering. 9:18 Then he slaughtered the ox and the ram as the people ’s peace offering. His sons brought him the blood, and he sprinkled it on all sides of the altar. 9:19 They also brought the fat portions from the ox and the ram— the fat tail, the fat covering the entrails, the kidneys, and the lobe of the liver — 9:20 and placed these on the breasts. Aaron burned the fat portions on the altar, 9:21 but he waved the breasts and the right thigh as a wave offering before the LORD, as Moses had commanded. 9:22 Aaron lifted up his hands toward the people and blessed them. And having made the sin offering, the burnt offering, and the peace offering, he stepped down. 9:23 Moses and Aaron then entered the Tent of Meeting. When they came out, they blessed the people, and the glory of the LORD appeared to all the people.

Aliyah 3 · Leviticus 9:24–10:11

9:24 Fire came out from the presence of the LORD and consumed the burnt offering and the fat portions on the altar. And when all the people saw it, they shouted for joy and fell facedown. 10:1 Now Aaron’s sons Nadab and Abihu took their censers, put fire in them and added incense, and offered unauthorized fire before the LORD, contrary to His command. 10:2 So fire came out from the presence of the LORD and consumed them, and they died in the presence of the LORD. 10:3 Then Moses said to Aaron, “ This is what the LORD meant when He said: ‘ To those who come near Me I will show My holiness, and in the sight of all the people I will reveal My glory.’” But Aaron remained silent. 10:4 Moses summoned Mishael and Elzaphan, sons of Aaron’s uncle Uzziel, and said to them, “ Come here; carry the bodies of your cousins outside the camp, away from the front of the sanctuary.” 10:5 So they came forward and carried them, still in their tunics, outside the camp, as Moses had directed. 10:6 Then Moses said to Aaron and his sons Eleazar and Ithamar, “ Do not let your hair become disheveled and do not tear your garments, or else you will die, and the LORD will be angry with the whole congregation. But your brothers, the whole house of Israel, may mourn on account of the fire that the LORD has ignited. 10:7 You shall not go outside the entrance to the Tent of Meeting, or you will die, for the LORD ’s anointing oil is on you.” So they did as Moses instructed. Restrictions for Priests 10:8 Then the LORD said to Aaron, 10:9 “ You and your sons are not to drink wine or strong drink when you enter the Tent of Meeting, or else you will die; this is a permanent statute for the generations to come. 10:10 You must distinguish between the holy and the common, between the clean and the unclean, 10:11 so that you may teach the Israelites all the statutes that the LORD has given them through Moses.”

Aliyah 4 · Leviticus 10:12-15

10:12 And Moses said to Aaron and his remaining sons, Eleazar and Ithamar, “ Take the grain offering that remains from the offerings made by fire to the LORD and eat it without leaven beside the altar, because it is most holy. 10:13 You shall eat it in a holy place, because it is your share and your sons ’ share of the offerings made by fire to the LORD; for this is what I have been commanded. 10:14 And you and your sons and daughters may eat the breast of the wave offering and the thigh of the contribution in a ceremonially clean place, because these portions have been assigned to you and your children from the peace offerings of the sons of Israel. 10:15 They are to bring the thigh of the contribution and the breast of the wave offering, together with the fat portions of the offerings made by fire, to wave as a wave offering before the LORD. It will belong permanently to you and your children, as the LORD has commanded.”

Aliyah 5 · Leviticus 10:16-20

10:16 Later, Moses searched carefully for the goat of the sin offering, and behold, it had been burned up. He was angry with Eleazar and Ithamar, Aaron’s remaining sons, and asked, 10:17 “ Why didn’t you eat the sin offering in the holy place? For it is most holy; it was given to you to take away the guilt of the congregation by making atonement for them before the LORD. 10:18 Since its blood was not brought inside the holy place, you should have eaten it in the sanctuary area, as I commanded.” 10:19 But Aaron replied to Moses, “ Behold, this very day they presented their sin offering and their burnt offering before the LORD. Since these things have happened to me, if I had eaten the sin offering today, would it have been acceptable in the sight of the LORD?” 10:20 And when Moses heard this explanation, he was satisfied.

Aliyah 6 · Leviticus 11:1-32

11:1 The LORD spoke again to Moses and Aaron, telling them, 11:2 “ Say to the Israelites, ‘ Of all the beasts of the earth, these ones you may eat: 11:3 You may eat any animal that has a split hoof completely divided and that chews the cud. 11:4 But of those that only chew the cud or only have a divided hoof, you are not to eat the following: The camel, though it chews the cud, does not have a divided hoof; it is unclean for you. 11:5 The rock badger, though it chews the cud, does not have a divided hoof; it is unclean for you. 11:6 The rabbit, though it chews the cud, does not have a divided hoof; it is unclean for you. 11:7 And the pig, though it has a split hoof completely divided, does not chew the cud; it is unclean for you. 11:8 You must not eat their meat or touch their carcasses; they are unclean for you. 11:9 Of all the creatures that live in the water, whether in the seas or in the streams, you may eat anything with fins and scales. 11:10 But the following among all the teeming life and creatures in the water are detestable to you: everything in the seas or streams that does not have fins and scales. 11:11 They shall be an abomination to you; you must not eat their meat, and you must detest their carcasses. 11:12 Everything in the water that does not have fins and scales shall be detestable to you. 11:13 Additionally, you are to detest the following birds, and they must not be eaten because they are detestable: the eagle, the bearded vulture, the black vulture, 11:14 the kite, any kind of falcon, 11:15 any kind of raven, 11:16 the ostrich, the screech owl, the gull, any kind of hawk, 11:17 the little owl, the cormorant, the great owl, 11:18 the white owl, the desert owl, the osprey, 11:19 the stork, any kind of heron, the hoopoe, and the bat. 11:20 All flying insects that walk on all fours are detestable to you. 11:21 However, you may eat the following kinds of flying insects that walk on all fours: those having jointed legs above their feet for hopping on the ground. 11:22 Of these you may eat any kind of locust, katydid, cricket, or grasshopper. 11:23 All other flying insects that have four legs are detestable to you. 11:24 These creatures will make you unclean. Whoever touches their carcasses will be unclean until evening, 11:25 and whoever picks up one of their carcasses must wash his clothes, and he will be unclean until evening. 11:26 Every animal with hooves not completely divided or that does not chew the cud is unclean for you. Whoever touches any of them will be unclean. 11:27 All the four-footed animals that walk on their paws are unclean for you; whoever touches their carcasses will be unclean until evening, 11:28 and anyone who picks up a carcass must wash his clothes, and he will be unclean until evening. They are unclean for you. 11:29 The following creatures that move along the ground are unclean for you: the mole, the mouse, any kind of great lizard, 11:30 the gecko, the monitor lizard, the common lizard, the skink, and the chameleon. 11:31 These animals are unclean for you among all the crawling creatures. Whoever touches them when they are dead shall be unclean until evening. 11:32 When one of them dies and falls on something, that article becomes unclean; any article of wood, clothing, leather, sackcloth, or any implement used for work must be rinsed with water and will remain unclean until evening; then it will be clean.

Aliyah 7 · Leviticus 11:33-47

11:33 If any of them falls into a clay pot, everything in it will be unclean; you must break the pot. 11:34 Any food coming into contact with water from that pot will be unclean, and any drink in such a container will be unclean. 11:35 Anything upon which one of their carcasses falls will be unclean. If it is an oven or cooking pot, it must be smashed; it is unclean and will remain unclean for you. 11:36 Nevertheless, a spring or cistern containing water will remain clean, but one who touches a carcass in it will be unclean. 11:37 If a carcass falls on any seed for sowing, the seed is clean; 11:38 but if water has been put on the seed and a carcass falls on it, it is unclean for you. 11:39 If an animal that you may eat dies, anyone who touches the carcass will be unclean until evening. 11:40 Whoever eats from the carcass must wash his clothes and will be unclean until evening, and anyone who picks up the carcass must wash his clothes and will be unclean until evening. 11:41 Every creature that moves along the ground is detestable; it must not be eaten. 11:42 Do not eat any creature that moves along the ground, whether it crawls on its belly or walks on four or more feet; for such creatures are detestable. 11:43 Do not defile yourselves by any crawling creature; do not become unclean or defiled by them. 11:44 For I am the LORD your God; consecrate yourselves, therefore, and be holy, because I am holy. You must not defile yourselves by any creature that crawls along the ground. 11:45 For I am the LORD, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt so that I would be your God; therefore be holy, because I am holy. 11:46 This is the law regarding animals, birds, all living creatures that move in the water, and all creatures that crawl along the ground. 11:47 You must distinguish between the unclean and the clean, between animals that may be eaten and those that may not.’”

Haftarah (Prophets)

6:1 David again assembled the chosen men of Israel, thirty thousand in all. 6:2 And he and all his troops set out for Baale of Judah to bring up from there the ark of God, which is called by the Name — the name of the LORD of Hosts, who is enthroned between the cherubim that are on it. 6:3 They set the ark of God on a new cart and brought it from the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill. Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, were guiding the new cart, 6:4 bringing with it the ark of God. And Ahio was walking in front of the ark. Uzzah Touches the Ark (1 Chronicles 13:8–14) 6:5 David and all the house of Israel were celebrating before the LORD with all kinds of wood instruments, harps, stringed instruments, tambourines, sistrums, and cymbals. 6:6 When they came to the threshing floor of Nacon, Uzzah reached out and took hold of the ark of God, because the oxen had stumbled. 6:7 And the anger of the LORD burned against Uzzah, and God struck him down on the spot for his irreverence, and he died there beside the ark of God. 6:8 Then David became angry because the LORD had burst forth against Uzzah; so he named that place Perez-uzzah, as it is called to this day. 6:9 That day David feared the LORD and asked, “How can the ark of the LORD ever come to me?” 6:10 So he was unwilling to move the ark of the LORD to the City of David; instead, he took it aside to the house of Obed-edom the Gittite. 6:11 Thus the ark of the LORD remained in the house of Obed-edom the Gittite for three months, and the LORD blessed him and all his household. The Ark Brought to Jerusalem (1 Chronicles 15:1–28) 6:12 Now it was reported to King David, “ The LORD has blessed the house of Obed-edom and all that belongs to him, because of the ark of God.” So David went and had the ark of God brought up from the house of Obed-edom into the City of David with rejoicing. 6:13 When those carrying the ark of the LORD had advanced six paces, he sacrificed an ox and a fattened calf. 6:14 And David, wearing a linen ephod, danced with all his might before the LORD, 6:15 while he and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the LORD with shouting and the sounding of the ram’s horn. Michal’s Contempt for David (1 Chronicles 15:29—16:3) 6:16 As the ark of the LORD was entering the City of David, Saul ’s daughter Michal looked down from a window and saw King David leaping and dancing before the LORD, and she despised him in her heart. 6:17 So they brought the ark of the LORD and set it in its place inside the tent that David had pitched for it. Then David offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the LORD. 6:18 When David had finished sacrificing the burnt offerings and peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the LORD of Hosts. 6:19 Then he distributed to every man and woman among the multitude of Israel a loaf of bread, a date cake, and a raisin cake. And all the people departed, each for his own home. 6:20 As soon as David returned home to bless his own household, Saul ’s daughter Michal came out to meet him. “ How the king of Israel has distinguished himself today!” she said. “ He has uncovered himself today in the sight of the maidservants of his subjects, like a vulgar person would do.” 6:21 But David said to Michal, “ I was dancing before the LORD, who chose me over your father and all his house when He appointed me ruler over the LORD ’s people Israel. I will celebrate before the LORD, 6:22 and I will humiliate and humble myself even more than this. Yet I will be honored by the maidservants of whom you have spoken.” 6:23 And Michal the daughter of Saul had no children to the day of her death. 7:1 After the king had settled into his palace and the LORD had given him rest from all his enemies around him, 7:2 he said to Nathan the prophet, “Here I am, living in a house of cedar, while the ark of God remains in a tent.” 7:3 And Nathan replied to the king, “ Go and do all that is in your heart, for the LORD is with you.” 7:4 But that night the word of the LORD came to Nathan, saying, 7:5 “ Go and tell My servant David that this is what the LORD says: Are you the one to build for Me a house to dwell in? 7:6 For I have not dwelt in a house from the day I brought the Israelites up out of Egypt until this day, but I have moved about with a tent as My dwelling. 7:7 In all My journeys with all the Israelites, have I ever asked any of the leaders I appointed to shepherd My people Israel, ‘ Why haven’t you built Me a house of cedar?’ 7:8 Now then, you are to tell My servant David that this is what the LORD of Hosts says: I took you from the pasture, from following the flock, to be the ruler over My people Israel. 7:9 I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have cut off all your enemies from before you. Now I will make for you a name like the greatest in the land. 7:10 And I will provide a place for My people Israel and will plant them so that they may dwell in a place of their own and be disturbed no more. No longer will the sons of wickedness oppress them as they did at the beginning 7:11 and have done since the day I appointed judges over My people Israel. I will give you rest from all your enemies. The LORD declares to you that He Himself will establish a house for you. 7:12 And when your days are fulfilled and you rest with your fathers, I will raise up your descendant after you, who will come from your own body, and I will establish his kingdom. 7:13 He will build a house for My Name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. 7:14 I will be his Father, and he will be My son. When he does wrong, I will discipline him with the rod of men and with the blows of the sons of men. 7:15 But My loving devotion will never be removed from him as I removed it from Saul, whom I moved out of your way. 7:16 Your house and kingdom will endure forever before Me, and your throne will be established forever.” 7:17 So Nathan relayed to David all the words of this entire vision. David’s Prayer of Thanksgiving (1 Chronicles 17:16–27)

Brit Hadashah (Renewed Covenant)

7:1 This Melchizedek was king of Salem and priest of God Most High. He met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him, 7:2 and Abraham apportioned to him a tenth of everything. First, his name means “king of righteousness.” Then also, “king of Salem ” means “king of peace.” 7:3 Without father or mother or genealogy, without beginning of days or end of life, like the Son of God, he remains a priest for all time. 7:4 Consider how great Melchizedek was: Even the patriarch Abraham gave him a tenth of the plunder. 7:5 Now the law commands the sons of Levi who become priests to collect a tenth from the people — that is, from their brothers— though they too are descended from Abraham. 7:6 But Melchizedek, who did not trace his descent from Levi, collected a tenth from Abraham and blessed him who had the promises. 7:7 And indisputably, the lesser is blessed by the greater. 7:8 In the case of the Levites, mortal men collect the tenth; but in the case of Melchizedek, it is affirmed that he lives on. 7:9 And so to speak, Levi, who collects the tenth, paid the tenth through Abraham. 7:10 For when Melchizedek met Abraham, Levi was still in the loin of his ancestor. A Superior Priesthood 7:11 Now if perfection could have been attained through the Levitical priesthood ( for on this basis the people received the law), why was there still need for another priest to appear — one in the order of Melchizedek and not in the order of Aaron? 7:12 For when the priesthood is changed, the law must be changed as well. 7:13 He of whom these things are said belonged to a different tribe, from which no one has ever served at the altar. 7:14 For it is clear that our Lord descended from Judah, a tribe as to which Moses said nothing about priests. 7:15 And this point is even more clear if another priest like Melchizedek appears, 7:16 one who has become a priest not by a law of succession, but by the power of an indestructible life. 7:17 For it is testified: “ You are a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek.” 7:18 So the former commandment is set aside because it was weak and useless 7:19 ( for the law made nothing perfect), and a better hope is introduced, by which we draw near to God.

8:1 The point of what we are saying is this: We do have such a high priest, who sat down at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven, 8:2 and who ministers in the sanctuary and true tabernacle set up by the Lord, not by man. 8:3 And since every high priest is appointed to offer both gifts and sacrifices, it was necessary for this One also to have something to offer. 8:4 Now if He were on earth, He would not be a priest, since there are already priests who offer gifts according to the law. 8:5 The place where they serve is a copy and shadow of what is in heaven. This is why Moses was warned when he was about to build the tabernacle: “ See to it that you make everything according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.” The New Covenant (Jeremiah 31:26–40) 8:6 Now, however, Jesus has received a much more excellent ministry, just as the covenant He mediates is better and is founded on better promises.
